Separate the joint angle from the saw setting
If two equal pieces meet symmetrically to form an included angle, each miter contributes half of that angle. For example, an equal joint that closes a 90-degree corner uses two 45-degree mating cuts.
Many miter saws label square crosscut as 0 degrees, while a drawing may describe the cut face relative to the length of the part. Those conventions are complementary. Confirm which one your plan and machine use.
Use a simple equal-miter relationship
For two equal miters, use: miter contribution = included joint angle ÷ 2. This relationship describes the joint, not automatically the number shown on every saw scale.
When the pieces meet at different orientations or widths, do not assume equal miters. Model the actual outside edges or make a full-size test before cutting valuable material.
- Label left and right cuts explicitly.
- Record whether the saw value is measured from square.
- Keep mirrored parts in matched pairs.
- Test with scrap milled to the real finished width.
Account for gaps and real material
A deliberate display gap changes placement even when the cut angles remain the same. Material thickness, edge rounding, sanding, and saw calibration can also change the visible closure.
Use the calculated geometry as a controlled starting point, then confirm one physical joint before batch production.
