Prioritize value contrast before exact color

Two woods can have different hues but similar lightness, causing the geometry to disappear from a distance. Compare samples in grayscale or squint at the group to see whether the intended planes remain distinct.

Maple with walnut is a familiar high-contrast pairing. White oak with walnut is warmer and more textured. Cherry with maple can begin with moderate contrast, but cherry usually darkens with exposure.

Treat grain direction as part of the pattern

Even parts cut from one species can read as different tones when the grain changes direction. Use that effect deliberately, especially in diamond or cube-like patterns where each direction represents a visual plane.

Mark face and grain orientation when parts are not interchangeable. The cut list can group geometry, but the workshop still needs a clear material-selection rule.

Design with approximations, approve with real samples

Screen colors are useful for testing composition but cannot represent every board, finish, or lighting condition. Prepare offcuts with the intended sanding and finish schedule, then compare them together in the final room light.

Remember that ultraviolet exposure and oxidation can shift color after installation. Build contrast with enough margin that the design stays readable as the wood ages.
