How to design geometric wood art before the first cut.

The most reliable workflow moves from finished dimensions to one verified motif, then from repetition to a numbered production plan. It avoids solving geometry after material has already been cut.

1. Define the finished boundary

Record the final width, height, shape, frame allowance, and orientation. If the panel must fit a specific location, use the true available space rather than a nominal size.

The boundary decides how repeats end. Postponing it usually creates awkward edge pieces later.

2. Choose one motif and one spacing rule

Reduce the pattern to its smallest useful repeat: a chevron pair, a herringbone pair, one diamond, or one radial segment. Set nominal part width and the visible gap before duplicating anything.

Build the motif at real scale and inspect where actual outside edges meet.

3. Assign material contrast deliberately

Choose wood species by value, warmth, and grain direction, not only by their names. A dark and a light species create reliable separation; a third middle tone can imply depth.

Digital colors help composition planning but cannot predict every board. Lay the real material together before final production.

4. Repeat, mirror, and inspect the perimeter

Duplicate or mirror the verified module instead of rebuilding it. Then inspect the center, transitions, corners, and narrowest perimeter pieces. Shift the entire field if a different origin produces a cleaner boundary.

5. Number the view and prepare the cut list

Group equivalent parts, preserve unique boundary pieces, and export a numbered view alongside the list. Cut and test one representative module before processing every part in the batch.
