Define the repeat as a module

A herringbone field should not be placed one decorative piece at a time. Define a reliable pair or short run that contains the correct length, width, rotation, and gap. Duplicate that module so every new section inherits the same logic.

The ratio between length and width changes the rhythm. Longer pieces create a calmer direction; shorter pieces create a denser, more active field.

Plan the starting position and perimeter together

Moving the pattern by half a module can completely change the edge pieces. Test several origins before finalizing the layout: centered on a joint, centered on a part, or aligned to a corner.

The cleanest visual center is not always the option with the fewest perimeter cuts. Decide which tradeoff matters for the project before batch preparation.

  • Keep the gap constant through every offset.
  • Mark grain or face direction if parts are not visually interchangeable.
  • Separate full repeat pieces from boundary pieces in the workshop plan.

Use the cut list to protect consistency

A grouped cut list reveals how many standard modules are needed and which edge parts are unique. That reduces recounting and makes it easier to prepare matching batches by species.
